Picture Book Den: How To Talk To Children About Death by Hilary ...

Caroline?s last hours in the hospice were peaceful for her but they were painful for us.? ?When the phone call finally came that she had died, despite the inevitability, the emotion was overwhelming.??

Caroline had battled breast cancer for seven years before dying at the age of 39. ?In the days that followed I thought a lot about her parents, and husband, but I thought also about the children in our families as well as the children at the school where she?d been a much-loved teacher.? ?To help my young daughters through their grief I encouraged them to think about the legacies their Aunt had left in terms of what she had shared, taught and imparted and in what was probably an effort to exorcise the grief, I then wrote a story about a teacher who dies.? The Copper Tree?developed into a?story of a small group of young school children who are encouraged to prepare for, and come to terms with, the subsequent death of their teacher, Miss Evans. ?At the centre of it all I considered the simple needs of young children, many of whom would be exploring the feelings of grief and loss for the first time.?? I realised that a relationship with a teacher mirrored so many relationships in other areas of our lives ? from parents, family, wider family, friends and even pets.? I wanted the story to be real and accessible and revised core elements of the text after seeking advice from bereaved families, from teachers and bereavement consultants.? ?One mother whose seventeen-year-old son had died from cancer told me that those with terminal illness, quite often ? despite the pain and fear ? remain cheerful.? They see and appreciate the pure beauty of life and find joy in simple pleasures.? ??Justine, a young mother of three children who was dying of breast cancer was critical of the lack of books that featured people as main characters, rather than animals, while teachers advised against using ambiguous language ?- saying to a young child we have "lost" someone can lead them to believe that we may find them again and when a friend was told, as a young girl, that her grandmother had died of a stroke, she became then fearful of stroking the cat. ??I also avoided whimsical notions of heave, leaving parents, teachers and carers free to consider those elements in their own respective and personal ways. Dr Paul Fitzpatrick, an expert in bereavement counselling from Cardiff University, explained that ?continuing bonds theory? is now considered by many to be an integral part of helping those who grieve.? Recognising and celebrating the legacies of those who have died is considered far more effective than ignoring, as previous generations have done, the fact that someone had ever existed and this was borne out when our local hospice, St Gemmas, established a Tree Of Life on to which bereaved relatives could hang copper leaves inscribed with the name of a loved one who had died.
So with all this is mind The Copper Tree took shape and in the story?the children are gently taken through the difficult process.? There are light hearted moments and moments of poignancy ? just as in life - and following a period of reflection after the death of Miss Evans, they are encouraged to think about all that their teacher has shared with them - or taught them.? ?These memories are then inscribed on to copper leaves and fixed on to a copper tree as a reminder of her lasting legacy.

We cherish our memories of Caroline and we are proud of the legacies she has left.? The Copper Tree, may not have happened had it not been for her and that, in itself, remains a lasting legacy to her.? We recognise also that, while at times the emotional pain has been difficult to bear, we have, as Caroline did in the end, found some measure of peace.

A clearer picture of how assassin bugs evolved

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Assassin bugs, so named because these insects lie in ambush for prey that they attack with speed and precision, are found all over the world. Nearly 140 species of these bugs are blood-sucking; because they can bite humans around the mouth, they are also called kissing bugs. All kissing bugs can spread Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease that imposes an economic burden on society.

Surprising, then, that scientists' understanding of the evolutionary history of assassin bugs is riddled with difficulty. The data are incomplete. Fossils, which exist for only a few groups of assassin bugs, are young, providing only patchy information on how these bugs evolved.

Now entomologists at the University of California, Riverside have produced a clearer snapshot of the entire evolutionary history of assassin bugs by integrating molecular, paleontological, behavioral and ecological data into their analyses. The result of their painstaking work is a new phylogeny ? the representation of the evolutionary relationships between species ? for assassin bugs. It includes the most number of assassin bugs to date and represents the most number of subfamilies.

"We can now zoom in on specific groups within the phylogeny to examine specific aspects of the evolution of that group," said Christiane Weirauch, an associate professor of entomology who reconstructed the assassin bug phylogeny with her Ph.D. graduate student Wei Song Hwang. "Our phylogeny significantly improves our knowledge about relationships within assassin bugs and will guide future research work in understanding how some of the interesting prey specialization behaviors and prey capture techniques have evolved."

Study results appeared last month in PLoS ONE.

"One significant improvement is the addition of several assassin bug species from the subfamily Reduviinae, the second largest subfamily of assassin bugs," said Hwang, the first author of the research paper. "Previous phylogenies have a very limited representation of Reduviinae, which means the overall interpretation of the phylogeny is of limited value."

Assassin bugs are estimated to have originated during the Middle Jurassic (~178 million years ago), making them a relatively old group of insects. They diversified significantly in the Late Cretaceous (~97 million years ago); indeed, nearly 90 percent of the existing species diversity we see today in assassin bugs started to diversify from this time onwards. The cause of this diversification remains unknown.

Blood-feeding kissing bugs

Weirauch and Hwang also determined that kissing bugs originated just 27-32 million years ago, the previous estimate being 107 million years ago. Mostly found in Central and South America, these bugs have evolved to feed on vertebrate blood ? lizards, birds, opossums, armadillos, bats, etc., and humans ? and can be found in diverse environments, from the Sonoran desert to the Amazon rainforest.

"The previous estimate of 107 million years ago linked the diversification of kissing bugs with the splitting of South America from Antarctica and provided a longer time-span for kissing bugs to speciate and spread across the continent and adapt," Hwang said. "Our research shows that this is not the case. By including more data and improving estimation methods, our younger estimate of 27-32 million years ago matches the time when the hosts, mainly mammals and birds, were diversifying at a rapid rate in South America."

The researchers caution that as natural environments get altered, more kissing bugs may be seen adapting to new environments and hosts rather than going extinct.

"The colonization of human settlements by wild kissing bugs we are witnessing now is thus likely to increase in intensity as more natural environments are replaced by human activities," Hwang said.

With their comprehensive sampling of assassin bugs and large molecular dataset, Weirauch and Hwang also show that the blood-feeding kissing bugs either have a single origin or two separate but close origins. Until now, the possibility of two separate but close origins of kissing bugs had not been hypothesized nor demonstrated.

"The possibility that there are two separate lineages implies that there will be shared traits among the lineages, but also slight differences we need to be aware of when developing different preventative strategies," Hwang explained. "A single origin, on the other hand, means we can expect common traits shared among all kissing bugs that can be targeted for control or monitoring."

Building the Tree of Life

The current research is part of the scientific endeavor to reconstruct the entire Tree of Life ? the biological concept that all living organisms are related and can be traced back to a single ancestor representing the origin of life on Earth.

"Reconstructing a phylogeny, a framework from which we can infer the evolutionary history of any group of organisms, is thus the first step towards understanding how life evolved, how different species relate to one another, how specific traits evolved over time, and why biodiversity occurs the way it does today," Weirauch said.

FREE-AIR COOLING OPTIMIZED SERVERS - Data Center Talk

Depending upon the choice of processors, the new Supermicro Fat Twin 4U server? can operate at temperatures up to 117 F (47 C), allowing the servers to take advantage of free air cooling solutions in a wide range of environments.

Air cooling is a very primitive method employed in cooling systems. The use of this technology dates back to the invention of the fins used in modern day vehicles. They transfer heat to free air. The transfer of heat here occurs by radiation form of heat transfer, where the medium of transfer for heat is air. Generally when heat transfer occurs through radiation principle it involves electromagnetic rays hence the direction of absorbed heat can be altered by using mirrors

The new Fat Twin is a high-density, eight node server solution, the design goals focused on delivering a highly capable server while improving Total Cost Ownership by focusing on power efficiency. Both performance per watt and performance per dollar considerations were applied throughout the design process. This resulted in changes to mother board designs, minimized power distribution losses, and minimization of parasitic issues, such as the power necessary to drive the server fans. Properly implemented, the Fat Twin is capable of reaching a PUE of below 1.1, according to Supermicro.

The Fat Twin systems are highly configurable, fitting in a standard 10? rackmount. While there are standard configurations that optimize the PUE, energy efficiency, and density of the servers, the configuration options allow the customer to customize the fat twin to meet their specific needs.

The system nodes are all hot-swappable, can support up to 512 GB of memory, are available with both hardware and software RAID solutions, have built-in management capabilities via an onboard dedicated LAN port that supports IPMI 2.0, and a pair of GbE ports with an Intel i350 controller.

The standardized form factor and optimized components of the Fat Twin provide additional flexibility for datacenter operators, especially smaller facilities that are not interested in or appropriate for other high-0density solutions such as blade servers. Having some basic information about the efficiency potential of your servers simplifies energy efficiency planning for potential customers.

Ga. church volunteer killing suspect to face court hearing

About 20 to 25 people were gathered in the chapel when the?shooting?happened.

By Alex Dominguez and Norman Gomlak,?Associated Press / October 25, 2012

Fulton County Police public information officer Kay Lester holds up the picture of Floyd Palmer, the suspect being sought in a fatal shooting at World Changers Church International in College Park, Ga., Oct. 24. A church volunteer leading prayer was shot and killed inside the chapel of the megachurch.

The man suspected of calmly walking into a service at an Atlanta-area megachurch and gunning down a?church?volunteer leading a prayer was committed eight years ago to a psychiatric hospital after a violent incident in Maryland, court records show.

Police in Georgia said former?church?worker Floyd Palmer, 51, entered a chapel at World Changers?ChurchInternational just before 10 a.m. Wednesday and opened fire, killing?church?volunteer Greg McDowell, 39.

"He walked in calmly, opened fire, and left as calmly," Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester said.

Palmer was a former facilities maintenance employee at the?church?who resigned in August for "personal reasons," Lester said.

The?church's?well-known founder and leader, the Rev. Creflo Dollar, was not there at the time.

Palmer was taken into custody without incident a few hours later at a Macy's at a mall in Atlanta's upscale Buckhead neighborhood, Lester said. Police spotted his black Subaru station wagon with tinted windows in the parking lot of Lenox Square. They didn't recover a weapon.

Lester said Thursday that police searched Palmer's home overnight in Riverdale, south of Atlanta. She didn't have details on what was found.

Palmer faces murder and other charges, according to online jail records. An initial court appearance for Palmer was set for Thursday morning. At the hearing, Palmer would have the opportunity to ask for bond, Fulton County sheriff's spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan said.

Court records show a man named Floyd Lester Palmer, born on the same day in 1960, was charged in Baltimore in 2001 with attempted murder, assault and handgun charges. He was committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2004 after pleading not criminally responsible to lesser charges. The records show he was released the next year subject to conditions that were to remain in effect for five years.

The court filings include motions by the defense for a dangerousness evaluation, which was later withdrawn.

Details of what led to the charges weren't immediately known. Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the department did not have arrest records in the case, which is not unusual in cases where someone has been committed. Palmer's attorney in the case, Kenneth Ravenell, was out of the country on Wednesday, his staff said.

About 20 to 25 people were gathered in the chapel when the?shooting?happened. No other people were wounded and the gunman fled.

Investigators were working to determine if Palmer and McDowell knew each other.

"We do not know if the victim was targeted," Lester said. "We are looking into that as he was the only person that was shot."

Ken Terry, a pastor at the?church?who is acting as a spokesman for McDowell's family, said the?church?family was distraught and trying to comfort McDowell's family.

"He would be considered a model dad," Terry told reporters. "To have this happen is just devastating."

Although the campus has security officers and surveillance cameras, Lester said the suspect was known to some at the service, so his presence wouldn't have been unusual.

The violence upset members and neighbors of the?church, which is one of the largest in the United States, claiming 30,000 members at the main campus and a ministry of satellite?churches?across the country.

Along with Bishop Eddie Long, Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta who have built successful ministries on the prosperity gospel, which teaches that God wants to bless the faithful with earthly riches.

Dollar didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press, but he preached Wednesday evening at a Bible study in the campus's larger World Dome sanctuary. He repeated the importance of having faith in God even when bad things happen and rejecting fear and doubt.

"We pray for this family," he said, referring to McDowell. "We pray for both families and then we pray for every family that's in here tonight."

Earlier Wednesday, several?church?members walked over to the scene after hearing about the?shooting.

"It doesn't surprise me," said Adolph Hanley, 66, of College Park. "People don't want the real Word."

He said of the fatal?shooting: "That's the devil's work."

"Why would anyone want to hurt the?church?" he asked.

Albert Henry, 55, of Riverdale, said his 5-year-old son was in day care near the chapel when the?shooting?took place. He said staffers called and told him to pick up the child.

"I can't believe someone just did it in the House of the Lord," said Henry, as his boy sat in the back seat.

Linda Pritchett, 43, a?church?member for 10 years, said the?shooting?didn't make her feel less secure attending services. She said people cannot give in to fear. But she said she grieved for the victim and his family.

"When something happens to one of us, it hurts all of us," she said.

The Bitten Word: Everyday Food Cover-to-Cover: All the Recipes in ...

"The dish as it was needed some meat or some?complement?to make it extra savory. ?Good solid base for a dish, but could use a few small tweaks to make it perfect. ?Sage, Broth, and Cream on their own make a VERY solid combination, where as you could throw any tasteless food and it would be great. ?One of my main thoughts (pointed out by my super-farm-friendly roommate) is that perhaps if this was a dish in the spring (when most parsnips are ripe with natural sugars) that it would have held up better on its own. ?Would I make it again? ?Absolutely!"

"The ingredient list is mercifully short and the prep work couldn't be easier for this dependable side dish. There is nothing here that is going to knock your socks off, but the parsnips cook up to a nice, tender texture and the rosemary flavor is noticeable but not overpowering. Since I'm not the sort to have fresh herbs on hand, I tried one little pan with fresh rosemary (on the left in the photo), and the other little pan with dried rosemary (on the right in the photo) for fellow short-cut cooks. Verdict? The dried rosemary tasted a little different, but just as good." ?

"To be honest, my husband and I weren't drooling at the idea of Chicken Potpie Pasta. It sounds likely to lead to a weird mush of sticky noodles.? We invited another couple to split the final product.? Our review: not bad!? It's easy enough to make if you already have diced chicken laying around.? And it?really?tastes like chicken pot pie!? I think I'd prefer a flaky pie crust to penne pasta, but this is a quicker, easier, and healthier alternative.? Not gummy at all; more velvety, in fact.? And the green beans add a nice freshness and crispness to the dish.? I might not be adding it to my regular repertoire, but I wouldn't turn away a second helping!"

"My local market didn't have chard in today, so I substituted turnip greens.? The recipe came together in the time it took to get the pasta cooked, which is my favorite kind of weeknight meal.? It also got me to try something new: parsnips (tasty!).? My only complaint about it is that the greens kind of clumped up with the parmesan in the pasta.? I also might use a hot Italian sausage rather than sweet next time--I think it could have used the extra kick." ?

"Although this was my first ever try at making stuffed shells, I couldn?t resist the urge to monkey with the recipe (just a little!).?As written, the pasta bake is a slight twist on the standard stuffed shells. The basil and zucchini in the ricotta filling keep things light and fresh, but the only other change is the addition of sliced pepperoni on top. I wanted to pay homage to Top Chef contestant Mike Isabella?s famous pepperoni sauce, but I also wanted to keep the recipe fairly simple. Rather than making the sauce from scratch,?I chopped up the 26 slices of pepperoni called for in the recipe (yes, I counted) and tossed them in a hot pan to crisp up a little and render out some fat. Then I just dumped the jar of marinara in and stirred it all together.?

I followed the rest of the recipe to the letter, and was rewarded with a tasty pan full of bubbling sauce and gooey cheese, and a kitchen that smelled like a pizzeria. Certainly nothing fancy or earth-shattering, but a tasty meal with some fun twists."

"I thought of these shrimp more as finger food than as a main course.?I halved the recipe because it was only my fiance and I eating it as an appetizer. I made the cornbread that the recipe called for in the morning and crumbled it in the afternoon. I made everything else at night. I used fresh shrimp instead of?frozen?ones. As we were having it as an appetizer, I did not give much importance to the salad, so I only used some lettuce dressed with olive oil and cider vinegar, mostly just for presentation. Finally, I made a cocktail sauce with?mayonnaise, ketchup and a little bit of?Dijon?mustard and?Worcestershire?sauce for dipping. The sauce really made this dish shine.

I really liked this recipe. The stuffing turns out really flavorful and tender. The shrimp, however, turned out overcooked and they were kind of hard to bite into. I would really make this again for a dinner party appetizer, maybe using less baking time and temperature."?

We made the cucumber raita as written and?sprinkled a touch of chopped fresh dill over the whole thing for?color.

Delicious! This would make a nice casual brunch dish at room?temperature or a light dinner. We served it with a side of roasted?potatoes to make it a little more fall-appropriate. Best part? The?whole dish took about 15 minutes to come together."

Those friends are also some of my favorite cooking buddies, so they were totally into the idea and the project. We added oven-baked potatoes and a cherry-chocolate-chip scone and it was good! Tasty, easy...we made two small changes to the recipe: we thought 6 eggs skimpy for 4 (3 men) and bumped it up to 9; we also removed the salmon to a bowl and added it back to the pan after the eggs were cooked because we felt like it would be prettier. "The pizza was super easy to make and was fairly spot-on for a 30 minute start to finish. As for the taste, it was okay. The hot sauce, jack cheese, and blue cheese combo was delicious. But, the chicken nuggets and sparse vegetables left something to be desired. Also, it was a bit too salty for my taste. If I were to make it again, I'd add grilled chicken (perhaps with lime) instead of breaded 'cutlets'. I'd also top the pizza with at least twice the amount of celery/carrots and add some fresh chopped cilantro and cumin seeds for flavor." More at Diana's blog. ?

"So my thoughts on the recipe: very good and definitely an easy, comforting dinner! I went through the recipe too quickly so missed adding the milk to the meatballs, so they were a bit dry. I also used less shallots because of food sensitivities in the household. I added a splash of white wine to the mushrooms, used 93% lean ground beef, and angel hair instead of spaghetti -- everything still turned out great. I think fresh dill is pretty key here. I usually am the first to sub in dried herbs, but the fresh really add something!"?

"There are a few obvious reasons why my husband and I liked this sandwich:

- There's bacon. And it's sprinkled with brown sugar, then roasted until crispy and slightly caramelized. What's not to love about that??

- The roasted tomatoes! Roasting cherry tomatoes really deepens their sweetness and flavor.?

- The cayenne-jalape?o mayo gives the smoky/sweet layers?a nice kick.

There's one thing we did not like: when I assembled the sandwich, I started with the tomatoes on the 1st (mayo-spread) slice of bread -- and by the time the other layers were piled up, the bottom had gone soggy!

The bread should probably be toasted -- it would make the whole thing less messy to eat!"

"Being fans of beer, football and fall, we were pretty pumped to get a sloppy joe and kale chip recipe! This recipe was perfect for a crisp fall Sunday.

Adaptations: We started out the recipe exactly as written, but made modifications as we went along. For the sloppy joes, we ended up adding an extra can of diced tomatoes, extra Worcestershire as well as various seasonings- smoked sweet paprika, cayenne pepper, a little chili powder. We ended up cooking it maybe twice as long as the recipe called for, reducing the extra can of tomatoes and making it saucier and more flavorful. The sweet potatoes needed to cook longer as well.?For the kale chips, we did multiple batches, one with salt and olive oil, the other with chili, cumin and red wine vinegar. They were both excellent!

Verdict: The recipe as written would probably be pretty bland without modifications for personal preference, but this is a great basic recipe from which to start from.?The sweet potato added a nice textural element as well.

Recommended Pairings: Southern Tier Pumpking Ale, Long Trail Harvest Ale, Harpoon Rye IPA.?

Served with:?Potato Salad (via Ina Garten)"

Although, the process of scooping out the potato pulp, combining it with other ingredients and putting it back in the skins was a a bit messy and putzy, I really liked the results. The potatoes were creamy and delicious and the topping added more texture and great veggie flavor. I chose to add a bit more veggies to mine and decided it would be great served with a mixed green salad for a bit more bulk. "First,?I'd edit the name of this recipe to something less misleading -- 'Toast and Jam' Bread Pudding, probably.?The prep for this recipe was a breeze -- I had most of the items on hand already. Soaking the toast in the custard for a half hour, then baking for an hour, and then cooling for another half hour was the hardest part. The bread pudding expanded dramatically in the oven. In fact, mine started spilling out of the loaf pan, so I threw a half sheet underneath it prevent additional spillage. Once out of the oven and cooling, the bread pudding contracted significantly. The finished product tastes very rich and isn't too sweet--perfect with a cup of strong coffee."

"This was a great recipe!? The plums, brown sugar, and butter mix together to create a tasty syrup that one of our tasters described as 'surprisingly autumnal.' The 'crust', which is baked on top of the tatin, stays pretty crispy.? The puff-pastry crust itself is pretty light ? you mainly taste the plums ? but it gets nicely caramelized.? The recipe also comes together easily ? cut plums, melt butter & sugar, cover with crust, bake.? It would be a good dish to make and serve at the end of a dinner party because you don?t have to pay too much attention to it.? It would be fantastic with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt.?

I do think cooking this in a cast-iron pan would help the syrup thicken and caramelize a little more.? We had a lot of thin syrup that ended up all over the counter when we inverted the tatin. Bottom line, I would definitely make this again."?

Maybe it's because I've never been enamored by food coloring, but I don't see how adding even more unnatural ingredients to a dessert that has one of its base ingredients as?marshmallows?is an improvement -- especially when the new process involves making the treats in three batches. The kicker is the instruction that tells you to 'rinse' the pot that held cooked marshmallow between batches.?

This recipe does add citrus zest, which tasted better than I expected, but I don't think it makes up for the fact that I could have made something much cuter (hello, cupcakes!) from scratch in a similar amount of time."

Because flour is?replaced by grinding oatmeal to a fine powder (and whisking in some?cornstarch and baking powder) you will have to pull your Food?Processor out - an extra step that makes the baking process a bit?messier. But the result is worth it- flavorful cookies with a good?texture! Mine were a bit chewy in the center and very flaky/crispy on?the outside.

Now for what you won't get from the recipe:

1. My cookies did not spread (practically at all) pro: you can fit?more on a sheet; con: you need to form them to shape before baking?because otherwise you'll get tiny cookie mountains.

2. Because you are using the oatmeal 'powder' and oats, I think its?best to let the batter sit for about 15-20 minutes before you bake so?that the oats will soften. Because I am cookie sheet challenged, I?cooked these in two batches. The second - which had to sit for a while?as the first was cooking - had a much better consistency.

I'd definitely make these again for a gluten free friend - or if I was out of?flour and still wanted to bake! Great taste! Worth a try!"

I am not a coconut lover so though I tasted the cake and enjoyed it, I thought that I might not be the best judge of its flavor. My qualified taste testers (aka co-workers) loved it particularly because it was not overly sweet. Some mentioned that it was slightly dry, which could be from overbaking, so I would err on the side of the lower baking time if I were to make it again. If you, like me, aren?t an avid coconut eater, I bet this cake would be delicious without the coconut or with some dried cherries or blueberries in its place, if you are so inclined. Hovering water droplets zip around like UFOs

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

It may look like a launch pad for UFOs but the floating objects in this video are actually hovering drops of water. Thanks to a new technique developed by Kripa Varanasi from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and colleagues, condensing drops of water are able to zip around like pucks on an air hockey table, a behaviour that could be exploited to make industrial condensers more efficient.

To make the drops levitate, the team coated a water-repellent surface of tiny bumps with a lubricant. When water condensed on the untreated surface, it formed droplets that were pinned in place (see video above). But on the thin slippery layer, they zip around at a speed never seen before on a hydrophobic surface.

The high velocity allows condensed droplets to move out of the way so that new ones can form. That could be useful in power plants, where condensers turn steam from generators back into water, and in desalination plants, where condensers are key. By increasing the rate of droplet formation, the new technique should speed up such processes.

The work will be presented next month at the American Physical Society's Division of Fluid Dynamics conference in San Diego, California.

If you enjoyed this post, see how a superconducting disc can be locked in upside-down levitation or watch a nanorocket propel itself through a liquid.

New insight on managing fungal meningitis

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? As the number of fungal meningitis cases in the United States continues to rise, physicians across the country are faced with how best to provide the early treatment that can save lives.

A University of Michigan Health System infectious disease expert is the lead author of a New England Journal of Medicine report detailing how the outbreak evolved and the complexities of providing anti-fungal treatments.

Carol F. Kauffman, M.D., has served as an advisor to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as it investigates the more than 200 cases of fungal meningitis linked to a contaminated steroid injected in patients for pain relief. A large number of patients in the outbreak are older adults, many of whom have substantial coexisting illnesses that make care decisions challenging.

Kauffman, a former board member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, has focused her research career on diagnosis and treatment of fungal infections, especially in immunocompromised hosts, and prevention and treatment of infections in older adults.

"Treatment recommendations will certainly evolve as clinicians gain more experience with managing these infections," says Kauffman, chief of infectious diseases at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Health System.

"Given the (lack) of data pertaining to treatment and the complexity of management, decisions about the treatment of patients with proven or suspected infection should be made with the input of an infectious diseases specialist," she says.

Patients found to be infected are being treated with a fairly high dose of voriconazole, which can cause side effects including visual disturbances, confusion, hallucinations, nausea, and liver test abnormalities.

"There is appropriate concern about the toxicity of voriconazole, particularly at the doses recommended to treat meningitis," Kauffman says. "Visual hallucinations have been especially problematic in patients treated in this outbreak and appear to be related to high serum levels. Decreasing the dose of the drug will obviate this effect."

There are also significant drug-drug interactions. Administering voriconazole to patients who are already taking agents such as blood thinners, statins, benzodiazepines, and certain seizure medicines, to name just a few, should be done with care, Kauffman and others advise. Doctors should play close attention to decreasing the doses of other medicines and monitoring blood levels.

The CDC reports the death toll has risen to 20 people with 254 fungal meningitis cases confirmed in 16 states, including Michigan. Infections have only been found in patients injected with methylprednisolone acetate from the New England Compounding Center, which has been recalled.

The CDC advises patients who feel ill and are concerned they were injected with recalled products to contact their physicians. Doctors should be aware of symptoms of fungal meningitis and seek rapid diagnosis and treatment to prevent serious complications and deaths.

Typically in this outbreak, symptoms -- such as headache, fever, nausea, and neck stiffness -- have appeared one to four weeks following injection. But fungal infections can be slow to develop and patients should be vigilant about onset of symptoms for up to two months.

Market Your Company With A Simple And Effective Website | Eric ...

Website marketing is one of the most effective ways to make your business visible. You can specifically identify and target certain demographic audiences and communicate your message to them in a number of ways. The information from this article offers insight into the challenges and benefits of Website marketing.

Despite the fact that your company may not have the budget to hire an expensive marketing consultant, you can find many free resources on the web that can help in evaluating your marketing strategy. Some of the marketing resources available online and locally at little to no cost are online business forums, informational blogs, eBooks, and local business seminars.

Make sure you have the money to buy a good domain URL. You probably won?t find the exact domain name for your company. You can get any domain name you want if you have over a thousand dollars to spend. You should definitely weigh the pros and cons of this investment.

TIP! If you plan on having a flashy website then you need to make sure that it is easy to navigate as well. Instead of whiz-bang tricks, concentrate your effort on honing your message.

Your website should be creative and well thought out. The way you build your website is going to reflect how customers receive you. You have to make it good so that it will convince visitors to stay. Even though the visual aspect is important, quality content is the key to getting more readers.

Reward those that are frequent buyers. This will help you establish a good image for your company and get your customers to order more than once. By doing these sorts of things, you create a positive atmosphere around your company and soon it spreads to other people.

You should honestly assess if your product is made with quality. If your product is inferior, web marketing cannot make it a success. A superior product is easier to sell, and will generate more sales.

TIP! Discounted prices are a great way to boost your marketing strategy. This often encourages visitors to buy.

It is important to know what audience you want to reach and what sort of content will make them want to visit your site. After you identify your constituency, you ought to have no difficulty getting written articles able to win repeat visitors.

You can use online tools to determine the efficiency of your marketing approach; one option is to calculate the percentage of site visitors who ultimately end up making a purchase. There are lots of different tools available to help you track your site statistics, from your overall traffic to your sales figures.

To build more revenue, you can benefit from real-time leads. Real-time leads are more valuable than other types of leads because if they are searching for products in your niche, they are likely in a buying mood. With a real-time lead, you get a potential customer?s information the moment they inquire about your products.

TIP! Make sure to include content that is original and rich on your site. Your content should get high rankings with search engines in order for you to attract more customers.

Create a video in which you demonstrate the item that you are selling. Customers love seeing products in use, so take advantage of this fact and make a promotional video. Display the benefits of your product, as well as unadvertised features. You can even put the video on YouTube, your blog, or other sites.

Having a squeeze page is a good way to grow a contact list. It prompts visitors for their emails. You can offer a promo item in exchange for the contact information. This provides them with something free and you can add them without any issues to your own list.

Try and find leaders of your industry to interview. Never reprint another person?s words or ideas without first securing legal permission; otherwise, you run the risk of incurring legal wrath. Make your interviews articles and put them on free article and E-zine directories. This will not only boost your traffic and sales, but your credibility.

TIP! To gain potential customers, think of having a $1 promotional sale for new clients. This creates excitement for what you are promoting, increases traffic and also provides more exposure for your product.

Offer customers extra discounts should they spend more than a certain amount of money. For example, you can offer your customers a 10 percent discount on all orders over $200. This is a great way to get people to spend more money on your products.

If you?re going to rely on claims in marketing your product, make sure they are claims you can prove. You can talk a good game about your product, but sharing a video or photo that provides proof that you?re selling a solution goes a long way. This demonstrates that using your product produces results.

It is important to be listed within Google for proper website marketing. Google is used by millions of people every day, so your company needs to be listed if you want to know exactly who is searching for you. Your business can find more success by being listed with Google.

TIP! Address any complaints personally. It may be tempting to hire an outside firm to handle these kinds of situations, but you are sure to get better results if you handle them on your own.

As mentioned above, Internet promotion is essential for communicating with potential customers in the 21st century. Once you understand the basic methods that are available, you can develop a specific marketing plan that is sure to meet your needs. Take advantage of the information is this article to improve your business.

Autism Pirate: You can't, or you are not able?

There's a difference between saying "I can't do that" and "I am not able." 20 years ago, I, like a lot of people, rolled my eyes at being "politically correct". Having a son with a disability has changed that. We don't say "colored" people. As a friend of mine once said, "we aren't a rainbow, we're black." We don't say "retarded" because, well, it's offensive and in most cases inaccurate. We don't say handicapped because it places emphasis on their disability. And I know Tara and I have beaten this dead horse, but we don't say "that child is autistic," we say they have autism. The reason to be "politically correct" is to place importance on the fact that people are people, first. Whatever diagnosis they might have, whatever their skin color, whatever their religious beliefs are and so on, should ALWAYS be secondary to WHO they are. If you have a friend battling cancer, you never say "my cancerous friend," you always say "my friend with cancer," if you even get to that within your first sentence of talking about them.? Ok, so enough about that soapbox and onto my point.

I ran a half marathon today. When we think about people who run marathons and even 5 and 10k's, we think of health nuts who are fitness over-achievers. But as I looked around today, there were people running and walking the half and full marathon who did NOT fit that stereotype. There were only people. Skinny people, overweight people, yes, those health nuts, older generations, a man with one arm, people running because it was their birthday, brides from the night before and young people.? People who simply said, "I can do this and I don't necessarily care what my time is, if I have to walk it, crawl it or be helped across the finish line." And yes, to my point, there are people who are unable to do it. THAT'S the difference. "I can't" usually means "I don't really want to", which is fine of course, but don't SAY "I can't" just say "I don't want to."

For many people with disabilities, they are unable to run a marathon, although given the chance, most of them would love the opportunity to do so. It's part of the reason I do run. I had a friend once who was fit, healthy, didn't abuse her body and took pride in the fact that she led that kind of lifestyle. And yet she lost her battle to cancer. I started running because I thought, she, more than anyone, would give ANYTHING to be able to go for a run.? So I did it for her. Do I like to run?? Not really. But it has become an easy form of exercise and a way for me to demonstrate that if you are able, you should.

Having a kid on the Autism Spectrum has made me realize even more, that there are things he is and will be unable to do.? And also, that there are many things he can do. He may very well be able to walk a tight rope one of these days. And he most likely will be unable to run a company as CEO. The difference between "can't" and "unable." ?

There were people on the marathon today who were unable to finish because of injury or it was too much of an effort for their body. There were also people with determination, even with a disability that didn't affect their legs, that WERE able to run it and finish. I hadn't really trained for this run for various reasons including injuries myself, and at about mile 7 the pain kicked in to epic proportions. I winced with every stride, the sweat was more from pain that cardio and I wanted to quit. My feet hurt due to plantar fasciitis,?my knees were killing me because of a weak IT band, my hips hurt probably due to deferred pain from my knees and I had stabbing muscle spasms in my upper shoulder.? Needless to say, it wasn't a fun race. But I kept telling myself that I was able to finish. I kept reminding myself, as I ALWAYS do in races, that there are things my son with autism won't be able to do and i AM able to do this, so i do. It proves to him, even though he wasn't there, that when he wants to give up in Math, when he wants to walk away from kids who aren't being nice, when he wants to abandon reciting his sight words, that he is able. And one of these days, probably soon, I will not be able to run a half marathon. And one of these days, my son will not be able to do something he wants to. And when that day comes, we will both be scorning the people who can.

EU "sucks up decision-making:" UK's foreign secretary

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is increasingly disillusioned with the European Union which it sees as a "machine that sucks up decision-making", Britain's foreign secretary said on Tuesday in prepared remarks.

"People feel that the EU is a one way process, a great machine that sucks up decision-making from national parliaments," William Hague said in an advance text of a speech to be delivered later in Berlin.

"...That needs to change. If we cannot show that decision-making can flow back to national parliaments then the system will become democratically unsustainable," Hague said.

The criticisms of Europe are some of the strongest to be voiced by a British government minister in recent months.

They are likely to strain already frayed ties between Britain and the EU's power brokers, with Germany increasingly irritated by the isolationist instincts of British Prime Minister David Cameron and the bulk of his Conservative lawmakers.

"This coalition government is committed to Britain playing a leading role in the EU but I must also be frank: public disillusionment with the EU in Britain is the deepest it has ever been," Hague said.

After a torrid time for Cameron last week, in which a senior minister resigned for ranting at the police and the introduction of a new energy policy was botched, the prime minister will be keen to be seen as reasserting his authority.

Cameron is under pressure to claw back powers from the EU, or even pull Britain out of the 27-member bloc altogether, as anti-Europe sentiment mounts among many legislators in his party.

He has said he plans to negotiate a "new settlement" with the EU as it seeks to further integrate in response to the euro zone's debt crisis, but Cameron rejects opting out altogether given that Britain does almost half its trade with EU countries.

Another restraining influence on Cameron comes from the keenly pro-Europe Liberal Democrats, the junior partners in his coalition government.

The prime minister has promised a "tough" and "rigorous" approach to EU budget negotiations next month, and has pledged to block a proposed banking union in the euro zone if it does not contain safeguards for Britain's own vast financial sector.
