Venezuela's Chavez denies rumors of health setback (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez denied rumors of a setback in his health, saying Thursday that he is at work and expects to finish with cancer treatments soon.

Chavez called state television and urged Venezuelans to "pay no attention to rumors." He appeared to be referring to a report in El Nuevo Herald of Miami that he had been hospitalized and that his condition might be deteriorating.

"I'm fine," Chavez said. "I'm here in my place of work and working."

Chavez said he is taking steroids and other medicines as he recovers from chemotherapy treatments for cancer. He said he is working at "half throttle" while undergoing physical and medical therapy.

"Here I am ... Chavez the candidate of the coming year, President Chavez of 2012, of 2013, 2019," said Chavez, who held a baseball glove while chatting with journalists at the presidential palace.

Chavez noted that he is doing light exercises as part of his efforts toward total recuperation.

"The latest tests, all of them, have shown very positive results," he said.

He finished a fourth round of chemotherapy in Cuba last week and has said he is done with those treatments.

"I'm going to completely get out of this soon," Chavez said.

Chavez, 57, underwent surgery in Cuba in June to remove a tumor from his pelvic region.

He has not specified where the tumor was located. He has said previously that tests have shown no signs of a recurrence.

The president said his body has coped well with chemotherapy and assured Venezuelans he would keep them informed.

"I would be the first ... to communicate any difficulty in the process. None beyond the normal has come up," Chavez said.

Critics of Chavez have accused him of giving slow, incomplete reports on his illness that have fed rumors.

Chavez initially said he had been treated for cancer June 30. He said later the surgery to remove the tumor was performed June 20.

New Sprint does push-to-talk without Nextel

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sprint Nextel Corp. will start shutting down the Nextel part of its network in little more than a year. So what are the folks who use Nextel's walkie-talkie-like push-to-talk function going to do?

The push-to-talk feature is called Sprint Direct Connect. Sprint tried offering a feature called Nextel Direct Connect on some Sprint phones in 2008, but that faltered because the Sprint network wasn't quite capable of offering the split-second call connection speeds users had come to expect from Nextel.

With Direct Connect, users can communicate with up to 20 other phones in a workgroup at the touch of a button.

Nextel phones don't work on the Sprint network, and vice versa, though a few phones can use either network. According to Sprint's latest financial report, it has 7.7 million subscribers on the Nextel network and 42.2 million on the Sprint network.

Sprint bought Nextel in 2005, an acquisition that soon turned sour. Nextel subscribers started leaving, and Sprint was saddled with the cost of running two incompatible networks. That has contributed to the company's constant quarterly financial losses since 2007.

Prevention of bedsores in long-term care homes cost-effective, study shows

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2011) ? For all long-term care residents, pressure reduction foam mattresses were cost-effective 82% of the time compared to standard mattresses, with average savings of $115 per resident, the researchers showed. Foam cleansers for incontinence care would be cost-effective 94% of the time compared to soap and water, saving an average of $179 per resident.

The clinical benefits of foam cleansers for bedsores, or "pressure ulcers," however, require confirmation through more research, the team noted.

"These results provide specific evidence to support practice guidelines, which recommend reducing risk factors and improving skin health to prevent pressure ulcers," said Ba' Pham, lead author on the study and a senior research associate with the Toronto Health Economics and Technology Assessment (THETA) Collaborative. "We encourage all providers of long-term care to consider these changes," said Pham, who is completing his doctorate at U of T's Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation.

The Archives of Internal Medicine published the study in its current online edition.

In Ontario, there are approximately 72,000 long-term care residents in 89 facilities. As part of their study, the researchers conducted a phone survey with directors of care at 26 of those facilities, and found that only half their beds have pressure reduction foam mattresses. As well, roughly half of incontinence-care cleanings were performed with soap and water rather than foam cleansers.

This slow uptake of quality improvements in pressure ulcer care in Ontario may be connected to the condition's low profile relative to other diseases. "It's one of those diseases that's kind of silent," said Prof. Murray Krahn, principal investigator on the study who is a Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy at U of T, and Director of THETA.

"Unlike HIV or breast cancer, there are no advocacy groups marching for pressure ulcers. The patients are seniors with co-morbidities and low mobility in long-term care," said Krahn.

Compounding the condition's visibility problem is that it doesn't belong to a particular clinical group. Patients are cared for by nurses, surgeons, infectious disease specialists, general practitioners and internists, so no one group is well-positioned to champion the cause effectively.

Yet, the disease burden for pressure ulcers is huge. From 5% to 10% of all residents in long-term care facilities have pressure ulcers, and a study published this year in the journal Health Affairs, cited by Pham and Krahn, pegged their treatment costs in all health-care settings -- including hospitals and home care -- at $3.3 billion U.S. annually. "We've estimated, crudely, that the economic burden for pressure ulcers is similar to diabetes. It's absolutely enormous," said Krahn.

The researchers also evaluated two other strategies for dealing with pressure ulcers: emollients to reduce dry skin, and oral nutritional supplements. They found some evidence that emollients were moderately cost-effective, and that supplements were not cost-effective, although both have been associated with clinical benefits.

Krahn attributes the range and strength of the study's results to the policy-oriented research model for pressure ulcers developed by his colleagues. "It's the work of about 15 people over two years looking at Ontario-specific data, and it's by far the best model in the world in this area," said Krahn.

That model, said Krahn, has produced a very clear message: "There's something relatively easy that can be done about pressure ulcers that will have a relatively large impact."

For immediate release -- Sept. 22, 2011 (Toronto) -- A new research study conducted by an international team of experts recommends a public health approach to cannabis - including evidence-based guidelines for lower-risk use - to reduce the health harms that result from the use of cannabis. Led by CAMH scientist and CIHR/PHAC* Chair in Applied Public Health (Simon Fraser University, Vancouver) Dr. Benedikt Fischer, the study is being published in the September/October 2011 issue of the Canadian Journal of Public Health (CJPH).

More than one in ten Canadian adults, and about one in three young people aged 16-25, report using cannabis during the past year. Despite the prevalence and health risks associated with cannabis use, the study points out that Canada has not yet taken a public health approach to address its harms, as we have with alcohol, tobacco, and even injection drug use.

"A broad-based public health approach to cannabis use would include a prevention strategy for young people, risk reduction strategies for at-risk users, and better access to treatment for problem users," explains Dr. Fischer. His latest study addresses the risk reduction component, based on a comprehensive review of existent scientific data identifying the preeminent cannabis use patterns and practices leading to key health risks and harms. Based on this evidence, guidelines are offered on how to modify these practices and patterns at the user-level as a public health-oriented policy tool to reduce the harms.

"Misinformation about cannabis can be dangerous," Dr. Fischer explained. For example, surveys show that many young cannabis users believe that it is safe to drive after using cannabis, whereas recent research in Canada shows that a significant number of traffic fatalities in young adults are attributable to cannabis use. "This resembles the situation forty years ago, when the majority of Canadians still believed it was safe to drink and drive," said Dr. Fischer.

"Cannabis is not a benign drug." Dr. Fischer continued. "The evidence linking patterns of use and problems is strong. We can use this evidence to provide straightforward, factual information to cannabis users and their families, friends or peers, on how to reduce the risks for problems, and to create screening tools for health professionals to help address the risks."

Some of the harmful practices and patterns of use documented in the study include:

• Cannabis use at a young age Longitudinal studies suggest that using cannabis from a young age can be associated with a number of problems, including mental illness and dependence. While most cannabis users will not progress to other illicit substance use, those who use cannabis from a young age are far more likely to make this transition.
• Frequent use - Using cannabis often, usually defined as daily or near-daily use, has been linked to a variety of health problems, including cognitive and memory performance, or risk for dependence.
• Cannabis use before driving - Recent data suggests that approximately five percent of Canadian adult drivers report driving after cannabis use in the past year, and high school student surveys show that more students drive after cannabis use than after drinking alcohol. It is recommended that anyone using cannabis should not drive for three to four hours after consumption.
• Cannabis use during pregnancy - While the possible consequences of cannabis use during pregnancy have not been reliably distinguished from the potentially confounding impact of alcohol and tobacco use, there is sufficient scientific basis to recommend abstinence from cannabis use during pregnancy.

"A key message is that the most reliable way to avoid cannabis-related harms is to abstain from use," said Dr. Fischer. "Those who do use cannabis need to be advised about patterns of use to avoid problems in the short and long run. Our guidelines are meant to target the most dangerous patterns of use among those citizens who use cannabis, and therefore reduce the possible health problem consequences of such use."

An Evaluation of a General Education Textbook in English: ?Managing College Freshman Language Skills?

The role of the textbook in a College English General Education (GE) course is highly regarded in the Philippine educational system, being considered as the primary material that guides the flow of both teaching and learning. For the students, it serves as a reference to which they can consult. Thus, its content, structure, and approach must be suitable for the academic needs of the students. Also, the textbook provides a common ground between the teachers and students?both preparing for the next chapter. However, the limitation of a single reference must be recognized and addressed by both parties. Yet, this apparent central function of the textbook in the Philippine educational system demands both quality and quantity.

The textbook that is evaluated here is ?Managing College Freshman Language Skills? used in English 1 taken by first year students of Far Eastern University. The criteria for this evaluation are: approach, style, content, visuals, and presentation, which are important considerations in textbook selection. This evaluation leads to a conclusion that states whether the book is suitable for a College English General Education program or not. With the assumption that the textbook is a primary reference in the classroom, this evaluation can be considered as a basis for the quality of language education in terms of textbook selection. Recommendations are given at the end of this paper.

The title of the book leads one to assume that its approach on Teaching English as a Second Language is behavioristic. Learning takes a period of time to increase both competence and performance through suitable input from the environment. The preface states the goal of the textbook, which is to equip students with English language skills (e.g. the four macro skills) to make them linguistically and functionally competent users of English, a perspective from systemic-functional linguistics wherein communication is the chief function of language. The lessons are widely varied and divided into four units, namely (1) Managing the Demands of College Life, (2) Managing the Demands of Communication, (3) Managing the Demands of the Discipline, and (4) Managing the Demands of Society. The unit division reflects Halliday?s theory on the functions of language from the individual?s concern to the level of society. However, this wide variety of content is not proportional to the depth of discussion provided in the textbook. In this case, the textbook serves as a supplement or a guide in classroom discussion. Another influence of this book is Krashen?s Input Hypothesis, as shown in the progress from easy to complex lessons. The first unit concentrates on the need of the individual and proceeds to the complex role of language in the society. The book is guided by theories like systemic functional linguistics and Krashen?s Input Hypothesis which have gained acceptance in the academic circle.

From cover to cover, the book has a certain style. Its green cover is an indication of FEU. Its quality paper and colored visuals mark its relatively high cost. But there is more between the covers that tells of its style. Font size is often a basis for a book?s difficulty. For this textbook, font is larger than that of other textbooks, which leads to a presumption that its content is fairly easy. Language, to which the font size directs to, supports this impression. It uses high-frequency vocabulary, easy enough to be understood by the majority of freshmen. However, as the lessons progress, less-frequency words are introduced such as?ingrain and?verbatim. This is complemented by the sentence structures which are simple enough for easy comprehension. Long and complex sentences are limited to the articles that are attached for reading comprehension. Aside from these, the grammar follows the rules of Standard English to present itself as an illustration of academic writing. The book is well written, being able to follow accuracy, coherence, and organization.

The content of the book is widely varied?from grammar, writing process, communication models, and basic linguistics to everyday tasks such as giving directions, identifying fallacies, and leadership skills. This wide variety of topics shows the students how wide the scope of language is. It integrates language into different skills including reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Each lesson begins with a concept map that provides a clear picture of what is being discussed and how these are interrelated with each other. Aside from the map, the goal setting provides the students? focus in each lesson. It also sets the expectations for each lesson. A beginning task follows, diagnosing what the students already know about the lesson. This diagnosis, if considered by the teacher, provides the starting point of the discussion. There are numerous articles to practice reading comprehension and to expose students to different reading materials. However, there is a lack of literature incorporated in the book. It also lacks introduction of new words. Lessons, reading materials, and tasks do not elicit bias in terms of age, sex, region, and religion. Instead, it promotes appreciation of language and communication skills through presenting different applications of them. It encourages students to learn appropriate use of language based on the situation.

The visuals in the book have different functions. Some, like the icons beside subtitles elicit interest from the students by stimulating their visual sense and supplementing meaning to the text. An important visual used in each unit is the concept map which provides a bigger picture of the lessons allowing the students to see the interrelationship of the topics. A noticeable feature of numerous visuals is that they are multi colored; even college students prefer looking at colored visuals. A colored image would attract the attention of most students, therefore directing their concentration onto it. No image depicts negative concepts such as racism, ageism, etc.

The units and lessons are organized in such a way that the level of difficulty is paralleled?from Managing the Demands of College Life to Managing the Demands of the Society. This also presents the students the wide scope of language, so that he/she realizes its necessity in his/her life. Each lesson is composed of an introduction, body, and conclusion. It starts with a briefing about the lesson and a diagnostic activity, proceeding with the main lesson and a supplementary reading material. It is followed by a list of important points and finally an assessment.

?Managing College Freshman Language Skills? used in Far Eastern University is able to provide first year students appropriate lessons that they need in college and beyond. Through the structure of the book, it is able to show how language is incorporated in the different aspects of one?s life. In terms of textbook selection, the English 1 course of FEU equips students with language skills that are necessary in their own endeavors. However, it fails to provide comprehensive discussions and extensive examples for each lesson. Much of the content is devoted on testing the student, which provides the teacher readily available assessment strategies, instead of providing input for the students. I recommend that there be more space for discussion and illustrations/examples, and less for assessment. In this way, students are encouraged to study comprehensively when anticipating the assessment. It will also give the teacher room for creativity. Ramona?s Marcus Battaglia won the team roping event at the Tehachapi Mountain Rodeo.

Battaglia was the header and partnered with heeler Kyle Lockett of Visalia for a winning time of 5.3 seconds in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo.

?Steer was excellent, and my heeler came around and pulled an excellent shot off,? Battaglia said.

Battaglia and Lockett competed in the afternoon performance on Aug. 20. They drew the same steer used during the slack that morning when Lakeside?s Ed Necochea and Bakersfield?s Dennis Watkins had a run of 5.7 seconds, which ended up being the rodeo?s second-place time.

?I knew he was good,? Battaglia said of the steer.

Battaglia, who rode Cocky, also knew that his timing leaving the chute was key to a good run.

?The chute was definitely going to make it or break it,? he said.

Battaglia noted Lockett?s role in the successful run.

?I didn?t handle him the best,? Battaglia said of the steer.

Battaglia and Lockett each earned $1,343 for their team roping win.

?I?m hoping that win at Tehachapi kind of got me a spot in the circuit finals,? Battaglia said.

The top 12 earners in each event during the regular season, which runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, qualify for the California Circuit finals rodeo.

Lockett also won the tie-down roping event (Battaglia?s time was too long to place) and placed in steer wrestling to win the rodeo?s All-Around championship.
