One of the images tweeted from the @ThomsonReuters account by the Syrian Electronic Army.

The group of hackers calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army appears to have compromised the official Twitter account of business news agency Thomson Reuters, posting a series of political cartoons depicting the ongoing civil war in Syria.

@ThomsonReuters began tweeting the hacked content at 6:33PM ET, posting seven pictures over a period of about 35 minutes. The content remained up for over an hour; the account was suspended at about 7:45PM ET. Other aspects of Thomson Reuters and the Reuters news agency, such as the websites or other Twitter accounts, were unaffected.

The Syrian Electronic Army has claimed responsibility for a number of hacks, mainly Twitter accounts of press agencies. The Financial Times, Daily Telegraph, and Associated Press all had their accounts hijacked and fake or Syrian nationalist content posted.

Syria's state-controlled Internet service provider pulled the plug on the SEA's operations in May, and little has been heard from the group since then, at least until today.

Thomson Reuters offered the following statement to NBC News regarding the hack:

Yesterday evening the @thomsonreuters Twitter account was hacked. In this time, unauthorized individuals posted fabricated tweets of which Thomson Reuters was not the source. The account has been secured and restored.

How Transplanted Pig Lungs Could Save Human Patients

I pretty much hoped to show people that it was possible to build a very lifelike robot that would turn people on instead of turn people off. Before we built it, there was a prevailing view that people were scared of lifelike robots. I didn't believe it.

I just set about doing the experiment of building the Bina48 robot, commissioning it to look exactly like my partner, Bina, and introducing her to, by now, literally thousands of people throughout the U.S. and Europe. She's spoken at major conferences, at South by Southwest, been on the German equivalent of 60 Minutes, interviewed by countless reporters. Nobody is freaked out by her.

In fact, people are almost always highly engaged by her. Now there are more and more people talking about building lifelike robots, and that was my charitable mission. I like donating by actually doing, making a project, doing something instead of just giving money to somebody.

On rooftops, a rival for utilities

energy

Panels in the Deer Valley section of Phoenix. Utilities say the subsidies given to solar-minded homeowners are too generous.

Joshua Lott for The New York Times

Panels in the Deer Valley section of Phoenix. Utilities say the subsidies given to solar-minded homeowners are too generous.

For years, power companies have watched warily as solar panels have sprouted across the nation?s rooftops. Now, in almost panicked tones, they are fighting hard to slow the spread.

Alarmed by what they say has become an existential threat to their business, utility companies are moving to roll back government incentives aimed at promoting solar energy and other renewable sources of power. At stake, the companies say, is nothing less than the future of the American electricity industry.

According to the Energy Information Administration, rooftop solar electricity ? the economics of which often depend on government incentives and mandates ? accounts for less than a quarter of 1 percent of the nation?s power generation.

And yet, to hear executives tell it, such power sources could ultimately threaten traditional utilities? ability to maintain the nation?s grid.

?We did not get in front of this disruption,? Clark Gellings, a fellow at the Electric Power Research Institute, a nonprofit arm of the industry, said during a panel discussion at the annual utility convention last month. ?It may be too late.?

Advocates of renewable energy ? not least solar industry executives who stand to get rich from the transformation ? say such statements are wildly overblown. For now, they say, the government needs to help make the economics of renewable power work for ordinary Americans. Without incentives, the young industry might wither ? and with it, their own potential profits.

The battle is playing out among energy executives, lawmakers and regulators across the country.

In Arizona, for example, the country?s second-largest solar market, the state?s largest utility is pressuring the Arizona Corporation Commission, which sets utility rates, to reconsider a generous residential credit and impose new fees on customers, months after the agency eliminated a commercial solar incentive. In North Carolina, Duke Energy is pushing to institute a new set of charges for solar customers as well.

Nowhere, though, is the battle more heated than in California, home to the nation?s largest solar market and some of the most aggressive subsidies. The outcome has the potential to set the course for solar and other renewable energies for decades to come.

At the heart of the fight is a credit system called net metering, which pays residential and commercial customers for excess renewable energy they sell back to utilities. Currently, 43 states, the District of Columbia and four territories offer a form of the incentive, according to the Energy Department.

Some keep the credit in line with the wholesale prices that utilities pay large power producers, which can be a few cents a kilowatt-hour. But in California, those payments are among the most generous because they are tied to the daytime retail rates customers pay for electricity, which include utility costs for maintaining the grid.

California?s three major utilities estimate that by the time the subsidy program fills up under its current limits, they could have to make up almost $1.4 billion a year in revenue lost to solar customers, and shift that burden to roughly 7.6 million nonsolar customers ? an extra $185 a year if evenly spread. Some studies cited by solar advocates have shown, though, that the credit system can result in a net savings for the utilities.

Utilities in California have appealed to lawmakers and regulators to reduce the credits and limit the number of people who can participate. It has been an uphill fight.

About a year ago, the utilities pushed regulators to keep the amount of rooftop solar that would qualify for the net metering program at a low level; instead, regulators effectively raised it. Still, the utilities won a concession from the Legislature, which ordered the California Public Utilities Commission to conduct a study to determine the costs and benefits of rooftop solar to both customers and the power grid with an eye toward retooling the policy.

Edward Randolph, director of the commission?s energy division, said that the study, due in the fall, was a step toward figuring out how to make the economics work for customers who want to install solar systems as well as for the nonsolar customers and the utilities. The commission wants to ensure, he said, that, ?we aren?t creating a system that 15 years from now has the utility going, ?We don?t have customers anymore but we still have an obligation to provide a distribution system ? how do we do that?? ?

The struggle over the California incentives is only the most recent and visible dust-up as many utilities cling to their established business, and its centralized distribution of energy, until they can figure out a new way to make money. It is a question the Obama administration is grappling with as well as it promotes the integration of more renewable energy into the grid.

Utility executives have watched disruptive technologies cause businesses in other industries to founder ? just as cellphones upended the traditional land-based telephone business, producing many a management shake-up ? and they want to stay ahead of a fundamental shift in the way electricity is bought, sold and delivered.

?I see an opportunity for us to recreate ourselves, just like the telecommunications industry did,? Michael W. Yackira, chief executive of NV Energy, a Nevada utility, and chairman of the industry group the Edison Electric Institute, said at the group?s convention.

The fight in California has become increasingly public, with the two sides releasing reports and counter-reports. A group of fast-growing young companies that install rooftop systems, including SolarCity, Sungevity, Sunrun and Verengo, recently formed their own lobbying group, the Alliance for Solar Choice, to battle efforts to weaken the subsidies and credit systems.

They have good reason. In California, as intended, net metering has proved a strong draw for customers. From 2010 to 2012, the amount of solar installed each year has increased by 160 percent, almost doubling the amount of electricity that rooftop systems can make, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. With federal tax credits and a rebate program for installation costs under the California Solar Initiative phasing out, determining how much to pay customers has become even more critical.

?Net metering right now is the only way for customers to get value for their rooftop solar systems,? said Adam Browning, executive director of the advocacy group Vote Solar.

Mr. Browning and other proponents say that solar customers deserve fair payment not only for the electricity they transmit but for the value that smaller, more dispersed power generators give to utilities. Making more power closer to where it is used, advocates say, can reduce stress on the grid and make it more reliable, as well as save utilities from having to build and maintain more infrastructure and large, centralized generators.

But utility executives say that when solar customers no longer pay for electricity, they also stop paying for the grid, shifting those costs to other customers. Utilities generally make their profits by making investments in infrastructure and designing customer rates to earn that money back with a guaranteed return, set on average at about 10 percent.

?If the costs to maintain the grid are not being borne by some customers, then other customers have to bear a bigger and bigger portion,? said Steve Malnight, a vice president at Pacific Gas and Electric. ?As those costs get shifted, that leads to higher and higher rates for customers who don?t take advantage of solar.?

Utility executives call this a ?death spiral.? As utilities put a heavier burden on fewer customers, it increases the appeal for them to turn their roofs over to solar panels.

A handful of utilities have taken a different approach and are instead getting into the business of developing rooftop systems themselves. Dominion, for example, is running a pilot program in Virginia in which it leases roof space from commercial customers and installs its own panels to study the benefits of a decentralized generation.

Last month, Clean Power Finance, a San Francisco-based start-up that provides financial services and software to the rooftop solar industry, announced that it had backing from Duke Energy and other utilities, including Edison International. And in May, NextEra Energy Resources bought Smart Energy Capital, a commercial solar developer.

But those are exceptions.

?The next six to 12 months are the watershed moment for distributed energy in this country,? said Edward Fenster, a chief executive of Sunrun, adding that if their side prevailed in California and Arizona, it would dissuade utilities with net metering programs elsewhere from undoing them. ?If we don?t succeed, the opposite will be the case and in two years we?ll be fighting 41 of these battles.?

Ireland's President Finally Signs First Legal Abortion Bill Into Law

(Some) abortion is now legal in Ireland for the first time, thanks to the country's new "Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill," which legalizes abortion in cases where the mother's life is at stake, including risk of suicide. Whoa: it's an abortion bill that associates the term "life" with living, breathing women instead of innocent unborn angels!

President Michael D. Higgins signed the bill himself on Tuesday instead of referring it to Ireland's Supreme Court to determine its constitutionality, which "surprised some analysts," according to the New York Times. Doesn't seem very surprising to us, given Savita Halappanavar's horrific and completely preventable death last October. Since then, the country has been scrambling to figure out a "compromise" between those who think abortion should be safe and legal for all women and those who were just fine with Ireland's only abortion legislation ? which was, until yesterday, a 1867 law barring the practice with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

The law isn't ideal, but it's a step towards actually protecting women. Predictably, anti-abortion activists are likely to pursue a Supreme Court challenge.

Nile Rodgers 'All Clear' of Cancer

Nile Rodgers remains "all clear" of cancer following his latest check-up.

The Chic superstar - who received his diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer in 2010 - was overjoyed after a visit to his doctor has revealed no trace of the disease,

He tweeted: "WOAH, I just got home from the Dr. He gave me video of him going down inside my body. It's a little too weird to post but maybe some stills

"Test results CLEAN! >

"Instead of showing gross internal video I'll show my doctor's fly examination room. I'M ALL CLEAR AGAIN! (sic)."

However, Nile has previously admitted he is wary of calling himself "cancer-free".

He explained: "On October 29th 2010 I was 'cancer-free' but on October 30th I had extremely aggressive cancer. I saw that 'cancer-free' means a couple of things; either they haven't found it and you have it or you might get it the next day."

The guitarist also credited his diagnosis and recovery with giving him a new lease of musical life.

He said: "It was the most horrible thing, next to Bernard's [Edwards, his Chic partner] death ... I have an awareness of the fact that my life can change in a split second."

Life insurance is the Rodney Dangerfield of investing | Mark ...

Estimated reading time: 35 seconds

Times are tough for cautious investors seeking guaranteed returns.

People approaching retirement in the next 10 to 15 years don?t enjoy the luxury of a long time horizon required to correct earlier investing mistakes or to recover losses.

Who could have imagined these record low interest rates persisting for so long?

So what can you make on a ?conventional? safe investment today?? The answer is very little.

Your bank savings account pays less than .25 basis points, your chequing account balance yields 0%, GICs pay 1-2% and require you to lock it in for long periods (see current measly returns) while cash in the cookie jar earns zero %. Bonds pay a bit more but carry the risk of interest rates going up and bond values dropping.

Many Canadians are losing sleep worrying about risky investments while ignoring a guaranteed investment with effective yields of 8% pre-tax and zero market risk.

Life insurance has been around for over 100 years and is still the Rodney Dangerfield of financial instruments. It is a mature product that gets no respect from the vast majority of people who simply avoid it and think it?s just another expense.? They know what it is, but no one has explained what it can do.

In addition to safety, security and above-market returns, life insurance in your investment portfolio usually carries a bonus bundle that can include free life insurance and favourable tax treatment for estate planning purposes.

Here?s an article I just wrote on the subject for the July issue of the TaxLetter?. It explains why life insurance is a unique financial instrument, not an expense, and how it should be used as an integral component of an investment portfolio. Read ?An asset, not an expense? HERE

No two situations are alike. Please contact us for additional information and a fuller explanation of what it can do for you and your family.

Sex and video games: Virtual reality erotica may be the HolyGrail

Video games

A small company in Irvine, CA, has started working on what it claims to be "the world's first erotic virtual reality game" for the Oculus Rift.

Wicked Paradise

A small company in Irvine, CA, has started working on what it claims to be "the world's first erotic virtual reality game" for the Oculus Rift.

Video games stand apart from the rest of modern technology because of the medium's immunity to pornography. Perhaps it's because gamers ? historically male teenagers and twentysomethings ? just aren't into porn, right?

OK, that can't be it.

The more likely reason is that it's really, really hard to blend sex and video games in a convincing way. Sure, on TV's "30 Rock," fictional character Tracy Jordan dreamed up a game "where characters get weird with each other for golden points." But until recently, all that reality produced were Japanese dating sims, clumsy hook-ups in "Second Life" and silly bouncing cars in "Grand Theft Auto." Even Paul Trowe, the CEO of Replay Games ? which recently rebooted the cheesy and borderline-offensive "Leisure Suit Larry" franchise ? admitted to NBC News that the infamous game "isn't about sex; it's about the absence of sex."

"Heavy Rain" was considered groundbreaking for the quality of its voice-over and motion-capture work when it was released in 2010

Heavy Rain / Sony

"Heavy Rain" may have been visually groundbreaking when it was released in 2010, but the horrendously awkward sex scene is one of the main things that kept players from truly suspending disbelief.

Video game virtual sex has been on an upswing in recent years, with varying degrees of success. Character-driven games like "Dragon Age" and "Heavy Rain" created somber novelesque sex scenes with a photorealism never before rendered in polygons, but drew complaints that the illusion fell flat. Character movements are a bit inhuman, or worse, players are required to participate in goofy ways, like using a PS3's dual joysticks to unhook a virtual bra.

And that's the problem.

The closer developers get to "virtual sex," the greater the risk of falling into the uncanny valley ? our natural revulsion to the not-quite human. (This divide is what makes "The Incredibles" more watchable than "Polar Express.") What will it take to bridge the valley? The latest virtual-reality goggles and full-body motion sensing a la Xbox Kinect, working in tandem, says Jeroen Van den Bosch, the latest entrepreneur to seek this Holy Grail.

Think 'wicked'
Belgium-born Van den Bosch runs a small startup in Irvine, Calif., and claims to have a working prototype of "the world's first erotic virtual reality adventure game."

Jeroen Van den Bosch, the founder of Wicked Paradise.

Wicked Paradise

Jeroen Van den Bosch, the founder of Wicked Paradise.

Exactly how players hook up in "Wicked Paradise" isn?t something Van den Bosch will detail during the development phase. But he claims his game will succeed where others have failed because the visual quality of computer-generated images (CGI) is finally able to make practically life-like characters.

Van den Bosch also has a not-so-secret weapon ? a virtual reality (VR) gaming headset heralded as the first VR product that actually works. The Oculus Rift ? high-tech goggles through which users see 3-D panoramic images that adjust in real time ? promises "total immersion" for the player.

"So in real life when you're reaching out to grab that door handle" (or whatever else one might want to reach out and grab in an "erotic" game), "in virtual reality you can see yourself do exactly the same thing," Van den Bosch said.

"It's awesome," he says of his as-yet-unseen game.

Erotica or smut?
Just don?t call the game "pornography."

"Porn is making something that you watch; we're making something that you do,? Van den Bosch told NBC News.

Van den Bosch working with one of the motion-capture actresses for "Wicked Paradise." He told NBC News that his work on "Wicked Paradise" was inspired by recent games like "Heavy Rain" and "The Last of Us" that were praised for the quality of their motion-capture and voiceover work that helped create realistic and dynamic characters with which players could interact.

Road to VR

He told NBC News that his work on "Wicked Paradise" was inspired by recent games like "Heavy Rain" and "The Last of Us" that were praised for the quality of their motion-capture and voiceover work that helped create realistic and dynamic characters with which players could interact.

?We have thousands of very well-designed shooter games that all cater to negative emotions ? terror and fear," Van den Bosch said. "But we very rarely have any attempts to create positive emotions like passion, seduction, and love."

He?s not alone in this observation.

Modern game design hasn't exactly evolved to make different kinds of relationships and interactions with game characters possible, explained Belinda Van Sickle, the president and CEO of Women in Games International, which works to promote the inclusion and advancement of women in the games industry worldwide.

"The template game mechanic for so many games is just shooting things," Van Sickle told NBC News. "And that's just because: sex is not simple. Violence is simple!"

Van den Bosch, too, is critical of the game industry's double standard of inviting people to consume horrendously violent work while simultaneously abhorring anything that has the least bit to do with sex.

Nonetheless, news of "Wicked Paradise" has been met with sarcastic smirks if not outright disdain. "This is why we can't have nice things," BuzzFeed's game critic quipped in an article about "the horny dudes" who are "making a porno" for the Oculus Rift.

Like its science fiction counterpart "Mass Effect," "Dragon Age: Origins" drew fierce praise and condemnation alike for its frank depictions of sex and LGBT relationships.

BioWare

Like its science fiction counterpart "Mass Effect," "Dragon Age: Origins" drew fierce praise and condemnation alike for its frank depictions of sex and LGBT relationships. Despite breaking new ground, many gamers and even the game's own developers now admit that the blocky animations and Enya-esque soundtrack for the sex scenes made it hard to appreciate them for anything but their sheer camp value.

Rather than a ?porno,? Van den Bosch prefers to compare ?Wicked Paradise? to ?Game of Thrones? ? something that has says is "very sexually explicit but still has a great storyline."

Will it catch on?
Whether or not the eight-person team behind "Wicked Paradise" is truly a group of inspired artists or just a group of "horny dudes," Van Sickle told NBC News that she doubts the mainstream game industry will change its outlook about sex in video games any time soon.

Sickle said that since the Entertainment Software Rating Board's main purpose is to protect "the video game industry from becoming a target" of public criticism, she would be surprised if the organization starting relaxing its stringent standards around sexual material (compared to, say, violent content) any time soon.

"Leisure Suit Larry" was one of the first games to popularize the dating simulation/adventure game hybrid for American audiences. While the series has become synonymous with the salacious underbelly of video games, Paul Trowe, president of Replay Games, insists that "Leisure Suit Larry" is more about "the absence of sex" than anything explicit or raunchy. His company recently released "Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded," the latest installment in the series, to middling reviews.

His company recently released "Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded," the latest installment in the series, to middling reviews.

The ESRB rating system maintains a powerful enough grip over many of the most lucrative parts of the industry that the vast majority of game developers making material like Van den Bosch's don't bother submitting games for a rating. Receiving an Adults-Only (AO) rating from the ESRB preemptively shuts it off from millions of players, since none of the major game consoles or video game retailers like Wal-Mart or Best Buy will allow AO-rated games anywhere near their customers.

As with the Internet, Van Sickle thinks that sexually explicit material in video games is an eventual inevitability ? as long as hardware developers like Oculus VR keep their promise to not regulate content. And, well, that may not be such a bad thing after all.

"There's a market for adult video games, because adults play video games and adults like sex," Van Sickle said. "So I'd like it see to grow and become something above-ground, rather than what it is right now."

U.S. warns Egypt over violence

By Yasmine Saleh and Matt Robinson

CAIRO (Reuters) - The United States urged Arab ally Egypt to pull "back from the brink" after security forces killed dozens of supporters of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi and opened a dangerous new phase in the army's confrontation with his Muslim Brotherhood.

Thousands of Brotherhood supporters were hunkered down in a vigil at a Cairo mosque on Sunday, vowing to stand their ground despite a threat by the authorities to disperse them "soon".

Saturday's bloodshed, following huge rival rallies, plunged the Arab world's most populous country deeper into turmoil following two turbulent years of transition to democracy with the fall of veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Egypt's Health Ministry said 65 people had died. The Brotherhood said another 61 were on life support after what it described as a ferocious dawn assault by men in helmets and black police fatigues. The ambulance service put the death toll at 72.

Bodies wrapped in white sheets were laid on the floor of a Brotherhood morgue, their names scrawled on the shrouds.

Washington, treading a fine line with an important Middle East ally and recipient of over $1 billion in military aid, urged the Egyptian security forces to respect the right to peaceful protest.

U.S. Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke by telephone with Egyptian army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who led the July 3 military overthrow of Mursi and whose face has appeared on posters across the teeming capital, Cairo.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry spoke to two senior members of Egypt's army-installed interim cabinet, expressing his "deep concern."

"This is a pivotal moment for Egypt," he said in a statement. "The United States ... calls on all of Egypt's leaders across the political spectrum to act immediately to help their country take a step back from the brink."

Saturday's violence, and the threat of more, has deepened alarm in the West over events in the country of 84 million people, a vital bridge between the Middle East and North Africa.

Over 200 people have died in violence since Sisi deposed Mursi on the back of huge popular protests against his rule, ending a one-year experiment in government by the Muslim Brotherhood after decades spent in the shadows under successive Egyptian strongmen.

PLEDGE TO STAY

In the early hours of Sunday, the state-run Al-Ahram news website reported fresh confrontation in the western Helwan district of Cairo between what it described as marching Brotherhood supporters and angry residents.

The report said several cars were destroyed and gunshots heard, but there was no information on casualties.

Saturday's killings followed a day of rival mass rallies, triggered by a call from Sisi for a popular mandate to confront "violence and terrorism."

Denying police culpability, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim said the vigil outside the Rabaa al-Adawia mosque in northern Cairo would "God willing, soon ? be dealt with."

A public prosecutor is reviewing complaints from local residents unhappy with the huge encampment on their doorstep.

Ibrahim said angry residents had clashed with Brotherhood protesters in the early hours of Saturday, and police intervened with teargas.

Brotherhood activists said they would not be cowed and warned of worse bloodshed if the security forces did not back down. Thousands were packed into the area as night fell.

"We will stay here until we die, one by one," said Ahmed Ali, 24, as he helped treat casualties at a makeshift field hospital on Saturday.

Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said they would remain until their demands are met and Egypt's first freely elected president is reinstated. He accused Sisi of issuing a "clear, pre-determined order to kill."

Mursi has been held in army detention at an undisclosed location since he was deposed. Ibrahim said he would likely be transferred shortly to the same Cairo prison where Mubarak is now held, after authorities launched an investigation of him on charges including murder stemming from his 2011 escape from jail during Egypt's Arab Spring uprising.

The European Union and major European powers condemned Saturday's bloodshed, the second mass killing since Mursi's ouster. On July 8, more than 50 Brotherhood supporters died when security forces opened fire on them outside a Cairo barracks.

The events have led U.S. President Barack Obama last week to delay delivery of four F-16 fighter jets, part of some $1.5 billion a year in mainly military aid from Washington to Cairo, though U.S. officials have indicated there will be no cut-off in support to the pivotal ally.

Canadians observed the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice at sombre ceremonies across the country Saturday. The events also marked the first official Korean War Veterans Day which will be held each year on July 27. "Establishing July 27 as a national day of recognition serves as a way to honour our veterans and this important moment in Canada's history," said Veterans Affairs minister Julian Fantino. "Today, Canadians will pause to remember the men and women in uniform who came to the aid of South Koreans during the Korean War." More than 26,000 Canadians came to the aid of South Koreans during the Korean War, and 516 lost their lives in the area. On July 27, 1953, the Korean War Armistice was signed, ending three years of fighting. Some 7,000 Canadians continued to serve there between the signing of the Armistice and the end of 1955, with some Canadian troops remaining until 1957. "South Koreans have never forgotten the courage and sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, and we have a duty to ensure Canadians never do either," MP Royal Galipeau said at a ceremony held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. On Friday, Fantino unveiled a new monument dedicated to Canadians who fought during the Korean War and to those who served after the Armistice.
