The stereotype has always been Chinese girls, foreign men. But now more and more Western women are studying, working and marrying in China, and they are discovering the charms of their Chinese husbands and writing about the experience. Mary Katherine Smith reports.

When Megan Millward came to Hangzhou in the summer of 2007 on her first trip to China, she did not expect to meet the man she would spend the rest of her life with after just four days. The 25-year-old Canadian recalls meeting her husband in the dormitory where she was living while studying at Zhejiang University, and being instantly drawn to him. He was fit, nice-looking and Chinese. Millward, who is earning her master?s degree, and her husband, Zhang Lie, are in the minority of cross-cultural relationships in a country where it?s common to see foreign men dating and marrying Chinese women but not necessarily the other way around. With the predictions by the National Population and Family Planning Commission that there will be 30 million more males than females aged 20 to 45 by 2020, Millward sees her marriage with Zhang as a small way to help even out the imbalance.

Chinese men still have a long way to go in wooing foreign women. A survey of 100 adult Caucasian women with experience living and working in China by Zhang Jiehai, a sociology professor from Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences was released early last year. It revealed some common stereotypes of the image of Chinese men in the Western women?s eyes.

Chinese men were complimented as being family-oriented, willing to spend money on women and serious about relationships, but there were also some negative characteristics. They had ungentlemanly manners, poor physique and a lack of personal opinion. Almost every participant in the survey critiqued Chinese men as having bad habits ? like spitting, growing long fingernails and lacking good dental hygiene.

But despite the generalizations, there are Western women who have looked beyond stereotyping and found love in China. Among them is a group of women who are writing about their atypical pairings.

Melanie Gao, a 43-year-old from Tuscaloosa, Alabama who works in Beijing as a corporate trainer, writes a blog (thedowntown

diner.blogspot.com) where she shares her experiences in a cross-cultural marriage. Her first stop in Asia was in Japan in the 90s to study, and she says she was not initially attracted to Asian men.

She first met Gao Xin, her husband, when he helped her through the process of ordering dinner in the cafeteria at their university in Chiba, Japan. At one point, he asked her if that would be enough food for her.

?I was touched that he was asking about the amount of food I was eating,? she says. Gao would later realize that making sure others have enough to eat is a common gesture in China, but this cultural difference helped bring the couple together.

But the differences that Western women and Chinese men face go far beyond eating habits. Dating and courtship can be very different from what Western women are used to. She says the initial dating period moved at a slow pace and she practically had to ask him to kiss her.

?But once he kissed me he moved very fast and talked about love and marriage just days later.?

Jocelyn Eikenburg, a 33-year-old American who blogs on speakingofchina.com, had a similar experience when she first began dating her husband, Jun Yu. ?Immediately after we first started dating, he was calling me laopo.? That is Chinese for ?wife?.

She was surprised by how quickly the relationship had gone from friend to potential spouse. Her blog focuses on cross-cultural relationships between Chinese men and Western women.

Family can also be another hurdle for many foreign women in relationships with Chinese men.

When Jun told his family about his relationship with Eikenburg, his father did not approve. ?He cautioned me about dating a foreign girl and did not want me to get hurt,? Jun says.

His family?s attitude toward their son dating a foreign woman quickly changed when Eikenburg went home with Jun for Chinese New Year. When she showed his father pictures of her family at home, ?it really opened him up?, she says. As filial piety is important to Chinese families, Eikenburg says that experience helped break down barriers.

Millward and Zhang met similar hesitations at the beginning of their relationship. ?My parents were unhappy at the beginning,? Zhang says. His family thought he should find a girlfriend to marry who would be more traditional, but ?after Megan met my parents they thought she was a very good girl?.

Other hurdles can often include the involvement of the family in the couple?s life. Gao says she?s had to adjust to how much her husband?s parents are involved with their life, having been raised to be more independent. It?s been difficult getting used to including his parents with major decisions, adding that her mother-in-law even went along on their honeymoon.

She?s also been surprised by his parents? involvement in raising their children. ?They?re way more involved than I expected,? she says. ?But if we asked them not to guan (or interfere with) us, then it would be like we?re refusing their love.?

?When you marry a Chinese you marry the whole family,? says Jo Gan, a 42-year-old African-American woman who is a director of foreign teachers in Yuyao, Zhejiang province. She adds that she?s not used to the fact that her husband?s parents call every day, visit often and when they want him to do something he has to jump to do it right away.

Gan, who blogs about her experiences in China in a cross-cultural marriage at lifebehindthewall.wordpress.com, says the biggest hurdle they?ve had is other people?s problems with their relationship. She attributes it to the negative stereotypes of black women in China.

?All of it has to do with education and understanding,? she says, adding that others see him marrying someone with dark skin as marrying low. ?Its like he loses face just being married to me.?

Gan and her husband, who is a translator in a local factory in Yuyao, have been able to rise above the unwanted comments and judgments from friends and strangers.

?We have no problems with our relationship,? she says. ?We understand each other and support each other in everything we do.?

These women?s personal, candid blogs have helped online communities of Western women and Chinese men looking for advice, or even sometimes love. Eikenburg, who writes Speaking of China, arguably the most popular blog discussing these rare pairings, says the most common question she receives from Chinese men is where to meet foreign women, while Western women are often unsure of how to ?read? Chinese men.

Despite the challenges, these women and their husbands find their cross-cultural marriages incredibly fulfilling. ?There are benefits to having two cultures,? says Eikenburg, adding that they like to explore each other?s language and culture. ?We have a much stronger bond because of it.?

An NFL lockout couldn't stop Tony Romo from scoring the ultimate touchdown this weekend ? the Dallas Cowboys quarterback married Candice Crawford on Saturday evening at Arlington Hall in Dallas, his rep confirms to PEOPLE.

"It was perfect! From the ceremony in beautiful white, to a vibrant after-party and great music selected by Tony himself," says a source, noting the packed dance floor. Reportedly, 600 guests attended.

Cowboy players past and present, such as Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach, Dez Bryant and Miles Austi, as well as team owner Jerry Jones, were seen helping the couple celebrate their nuptials in the historic building tucked in the city's Oak Lawn neighborhood, reports Dallas's KDAF-TV.

Crawford, a pageant queen and KDAF-TV anchor (as well as the younger sister of Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford), received an 8-carat yellow diamond engagement ring, which features one carat of round diamonds surrounding the center stone. Her bridesmaids wore Badgley Mischka dresses.

Guests partied into the night at a reception organized by wedding planner Todd Fiscus, whose credits include New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning's wedding. Short ribs and pizza were promised on the new couple's reception menu.

"We did lots of man food," Fiscus told CBS about the menu for the big day. "I have a lot of football players to feed."

Fiscus was also responsible for the custom gift bag for the out-of town guests.

Monogrammed with the wedding couple's initials, the bag contains a Neiman Marcus gift card, assorted treats from Great One Cookies, a Mix of the Month CD by DJ Lucy Wrubel, a miniature bottle of Moet champagne, a box of Dude Sweet Chocolates, gourmet popcorn, chips and salsa, "Killer Pecans" from Bandera Foods, Voss bottled water, and an assortment of Kiehl's beauty and body products.

The couple became engaged in December, when Romo, 31, proposed to Crawford on her 24th birthday. They have been dating since summer 2009, shortly after Romo split from Jessica Simpson.

Sunday?s elections saw the Socialists lose ground to the extent that a General Election could be called before March next year. If that were to happen the gaming legislation would be delayed past the current date of December.

?The regulator has in mind to start issuing licences in December and the main obstacle now for the process could be an early general election,? Santiago Asensi, a lawyer at Spanish firm Asensi Abogados, told GamblingCompliance.

Although it?s still full steam ahead for those working on the country?s new online gaming law as the European Commission found no major faults with the law itself. GamblingCompliance reports that gaming companies welcomed the law whilst at the same time recognizing that there?s a long way to go.

Clive Hawkswood, chief executive of the Remote Gambling Association (RGA), said, ?For us the decrees are now the big issue, and are at least equally as important as the framework. This was round one and we?ve got round two to come.?

He continued, ?There are still serious commercial issues to address. The regulations won?t be attractive unless the government fully understands the business side of things.?

Hawskwood also added that there are a number of ambiguities that need to be cleared up. This includes whether online bingo and in-play betting will be allowed under the new law. In addition it?s not been made clear what presence license holders will need to have on Spanish soil.

The country itself has already been beaten to the pumps by autonomous region Madrid after they reportedly awarded their first license to Casino Gran Madrid. That means they may start offering a number of services way before the rest of the country. A wait that may get even longer.

Hello There
I'm in the process of selling the lease to my fish & chip shop. I brought it for 63K on 13 Oct 2003 and am now selling it for 80K.
When I purchased the lease the 63K was split (as requested by the seller) Goodwill @ 57K, Fixtures & Fittings @ 5K and Lease @ no value.
My solicitor called me yesterday and asked me how I would like to split my selling price of 80K.
I called my accountant who requested some information before he could do his calculations. He requested I send him a list of all the fixture and fittings to be included in the sale together with their individual values:confused: .
Writing the list is easy enough but how do I guess the value? When I put this question to him he told me to write whatever I thought the items to be worth. Is this right? Do I just pluck the figures from the top of my head? Or shall I just split the 5K (the price I paid for the f&f 3yrs ago) between all the items? FYI, I never received such a list or breakdown when I brought the lease.
I then asked him about something I learnt from this site.
That is, if a person sells their property where they usually live and then buy another property to live in within a set time, the gains they make on the sale is not subject to capital gains tax. (sorry, I get the basic idea but don't know the correct terms)
The premises comprises of both the shop and a house where we have lived since we brought the lease. We won't be looking to buy another house immediately but am planning to do so within the next 2-3yrs. Does the above apply to us?
My accountant's response was to ask me to supply him with a split of what I thought the house was worth and what I thought the shop was worth and again told me to pluck the figure from the top of my head.
When I purchased the lease, there was no breakdown or split between house and shop.
So the conclusion is that I'm stuck. I have absolutely no idea what I should do.
My accountant has advised me that I have a 8K capital tax allowance. That the total sale price (plus expenses) minus the purchase price (plus expenses). The profit minus 8K will then be liable to captial tax. Is this right? If so, then why did the people I brought the shop from split the value up the way they did? Why not just split it equally between the 3?
Is our income relevant to any of this?
Please please pretty please help.

DumReply:This is probably a stupid question but here goes anyway. Should ALL accountants know what I mean if I say to them tax written down value? I mean, if this was so then why did he ask me for a breakdown TOGETHER with the value? Should I just give him a list of the f&f's included in the sale, how much I paid for them 3yrs ago and then ask him to value them at tax written down value accourdingly?
This leads me to VAT. So many taxes! At the moment I am not VAT registered. Do I need to pay VAT on any of this?

Yes, you can forget PPR and breakdown. But no, you can't just give them the figures. There is no CGT on F&F ? you will have claimed income tax relief on your F&F purchases, so if you sell them for the same amount, and havn't bought any more, you will have to repay the same amount back in income tax. That is why you need your accountant to tell you the tax written down value of your F&F ? any more and you pay income tax and NIC ? there is no CGT on F&F unless you sell them for more than you paid for them.
No CGT and IT are completely different and have completely different rules. You pay income tax on trading and other income, you pay capital gains tax on investment profits. You don't pay IT on the profit on goodwill, but would pay CGT if it weren't for the taper relief and annual exemption.

If purchase was Goodwill @ 57K, Fixtures & Fittings @ 5K and Lease @ no value.
and sale is Goodwill @ 75K, fixture & fittings @ 5K and lease @ no value.
then there will be no gain on fixture & fittings and no gain on the lease.
There will be a gain on the Goodwill of 18K. This minus 75% (185K ? 13.5K) will leave me with 4.5K. As this figure is within my capital tax allowance I don't need to pay any capital tax.
Is this right? Does this mean I can forget all about the PPR and breakdown list my accountant requested? Can I just go back to my solicitor and give them the above breakdown?
One more question please. Is capital gain the same as income tax? Do I then pay income tax on this amount? Or do I pay it on the 18K I gained on the goodwill?

Reply:These are all questions you should be asking your accountant ? that's what he's there for.
As to estimating value ? anything will do as long as it is reasonable ? by reasonable I mean don't charge ?1000 for a lightbulb.
The values can be set (within bounds) to minimise tax so ask what the effect will be. As long as the figures look ok you won't get into trouble.

Reply:From the info given, there is no capital gains tax ? the computations may well be complicated, but that's what your accountant is there for.
The goodwill element is wholly business, so you'll get the full 75% business asset taper relief on that (if you've been there over two full years).
Forget the living accommodation etc ? that's a red herring ? as long as you sell the lease for the same amount you paid for it, i.e. ?nil, then there is no gain, nor loss there and you can safely ignore it.
Turning to the apportionment for F&F, you need to throw the question back to your accountant and ask him what is the tax written down value of the f&f ? if you put too high a price on the f&f you will pay income tax and nic on the excess, so you need the F&F to be a low as possible, preferably around the tax written down value. Your purchaser will want as high a price as possible for F&F for them to get tax relief against their income tax and NIC. As long as the price is not a million miles away from realistic market value, you'll have no problems.
So your answer, the F&F is your tax written down value, the lease is nil, and the remainder is goodwill. Simple!

Does PPR relief apply to only purely domestic premises. Ours is part commercial part domestic. As I said before, when we purchased there was no split mentioned re how much we were paying for house and how much we were paying for the shop.

So lets conclude.
Say I don't have any expenses. 80K minus 63K = 17K. I can then minus 8K for my allowance = 9K.
Say I then split the 80K 50/50 between house and shop. This will mean 9K /2 = 4.5K. So the 4.5K for the house will come under PPR relief.
The 4.5K for the shop can be deducted by 75% as per the taper relief so that's minus 3,375 so I only have a gain of 1,125 remaining liable for CT?
Or shall I just allocate more to the house. Say 60/40 or 70/30? Is this REALLY up to me? Can I REALLY split it however I like?

Ok, is the whole sale including flat for ?80k? and the whole purchase ?67k
If so, forget about it. The gain relating to the flat will be exepmt under your PPR relief.
The remainder of the gain will gain taper relief at 75% leaving less than your personal allowance in all circumstances.
As for a split, anything reasonable as no chargeable gain will arise but be sure to allocate it in similar to purchase, otherwise you have a large gain on say the lease with a loss against the goodwill. Then the complication of having offset them which may be challenged.
The sale and purchase aspect you allude to is rollowver relief and relates to businesses and their assets, you have no need to use it in these circumstances.

So income tax does not apply to the partnership business. The partners themselves may have to make provisional tax instalments on their own individual behalfs.

The partnership is an employer entity, however, and will be subject to pay PAYG withholding, Employee Superannuation and possibly Fringe Benefits Tax in respect of their employees' remuneration? but not in respect of their own profit drawings, because a partner cannot be an employee of themselves.
