You may want to add a pair of cross-trainers and work out clothes to your back-to-school shopping list because on August 29, 2011, UTEP will unveil its new state-of-the-art student recreation center.
UTEP has added 88,000 square feet of new amenities to the complex which has been known as the Swimming and Fitness Center. Now, the all-inclusive health hub is going to be known as the ?Student Recreation Center,? or ?SRC? for short.
Hector Munoz,?UTEP?s?Recreational Sports Department Director, sat down with TSM for an exclusive interview regarding what students and alumni can look forward to when the new center opens its? doors.

The Stanton Magazine: When designing the SRC, what goals did you have in mind?
Hector Munoz: Well, I?ve been at UTEP for over twenty years, and?we?ve?never really had a fitness center that catered to the students.?For the longest time, students only had Memorial Gym, but in 1996, we changed that with the opening of the Swimming and Fitness Center. The problem was, however, that students still had to travel back and forth between the two complexes if they wanted to participate in different activities.?The SRC eliminates this separation by combining the?amenities?of both locations and allowing the students one centralized location for general health, fitness, and sporting.
TSM: How did UTEP students influence the design of the new SRC?
Hector Munoz: Well, back in 2005 students voted on making upgrades to the Swimming and Fitness Center.? For several semesters, we would survey them and ask what they would like to have added, or what they would like to have changed.? We also began tracking the daily traffic at the Swimming and Fitness Center and at Memorial Gym so that way we could get an estimate of how many students were using specific exercise machines, basketball courts, and other items. This analysis was broken down even further by time periods of the year, semester and even day of the week. ?Now, we anticipate to average 5,000 visitors a day at the new SRC.
What?s best though, is that everything that has been added to the SRC was chosen by the students. ?The students here at UTEP are really going have a great new option for fun and exercising.

TSM: What new additions can students, alumni, and even UTEP faculty look forward to this fall?
Hector Munoz: That?s a tough question, because I hope I don?t leave anything out.
The SRC will consist of three new levels:
The entry level will have new administrative offices and a juice bar that will provide Wi-Fi access.? There will also be a new 5,000 sq. ft. free-weight area. ?Finally, there will also be two fitness studios for yoga or dance aerobics and there will be a boxing room.
The Lower Level will have two full-size basketball courts (which can also be used as volleyball courts), and what we like to call a M.A.C. which is a multi-activity complex which can be used for indoor soccer, dodge ball; the possibilities are endless for the M.A.C.? There will also be new men?s and women?s locker rooms and a family locker room.
The Lower Level will also be home to our new Outdoor Recreation Center.? The ORC will be a place where students can rent camping gear, rafting gear, even skis.? There will be computers, maps and information available in the ORC to help students plan their next adventure.
The pride and joy of the lower level will really be a 39 ft tall indoor climbing wall that is shaped like a Pick.? Around this climbing marvel will be 100 ft of Bouldering Wall.? Students really emphasized that they wanted to have an indoor rock climbing area; I hope they?re up for the challenge.
Finally, the upper level will be the cardio level.? Students will be able to find every cardio machine imaginable on this level.? There will also be a 200 meter indoor track that has been replicated to give runners the feel that they are on an actual outdoor track (think of an indoor version of Kidd Field?s track).? There will also be over 50 Cybex machines and nearly 50 plasma televisions.

We didn?t cut any corners; we truly gave the students everything that they asked for.
TSM: Were any additions made outside the SRC?
Hector Munoz: Yes, there will be two new beach volleyball courts, three racquetball courts that are in their own building, and an outdoor MAC is also in the works.
TSM: Will you be making any renovations to the current Swimming and Fitness Center?
Hector Munoz: We didn?t want the current center to look outdated or to fall behind, so we are remodeling the existing locker rooms for the first time since 1996. We will also be re-tiling and re-plastering the swimming pools.
TSM: Who can use the SRC?
Hector Munoz: Faculty and alumni have access to the SRC, but they have to pay a yearly fee.? The students, of course, get to use it for free.
The students of UTEP were our main priority throughout the whole process, from the moment that first shovel went into the ground, we knew we were going to keep the students in mind for everything we purchased, built and added; this truly is a Student Recreation Center.
