At Leominster library, lessons in job hunting | Business Tutorials ...

LEOMINSTER ? If you?re looking for a job, simply sitting home scanning employment boards isn?t going to get you one, said Cindy Testa, a facilitator for a job-search networking group that meets weekly at the Leominster Public Library.

Testa, a Leominster resident who has been looking for a job since February, said based on her recent interviewing experience, employers want to see that candidates have stayed active throughout the search process.

? ?So, what have you been doing?? is a question they ask,? Testa told about a dozen job searchers who gathered for the regular Tuesday morning session in a library conference room.

The group members Tuesday were mostly middle-aged people, many of them professionals who left the job market for personal reasons and are now ready to get back into it, or have been laid off and are struggling to find regular employment again.

Some have been out of work for two or three years, but they hope that attending weekly workshop sessions will improve their odds of landing the right job.

This week, they ran through mock interviews with Walter Morette, a finance professional with management-level experience. Morette wasn?t shy about delivering constructive criticism to members. for example, he advised one man to take his handshake down a notch.

Sessions aren?t rigid, Testa said, but members and volunteer speakers take the matter seriously.

?We try to make people comfortable, but we are tough sometimes, too,? Testa said.

The workshop is sponsored by the North Central Career Center on Erdman way, but it moved to the Leominster Public Library several months ago after library officials agreed to let the group use the space.

Patty Fields, a workshop coordinator for the North Central Career Center, discussed ways to increase interest in the workshop with members Tuesday. The group will continue to meet throughout the summer from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays.

Job searchers can expect to discuss a variety of topics related to finding employment, from resume and cover-letter design, to interview techniques and networking opportunities.

?This is actively doing something while you?re in the job search,? Fields said.
